Refugee Health Program

Refugees in Rhode Island

The state of Rhode Island has welcomed refugees since the 1980s. In the 20+ years since refugee resettlement began, more than 4300 refugees have started anew in Rhode Island. Each year, the number of refugee arrivals fluctuates based on the stability in refugees’ countries of origin, international affairs, and US political policies. The President of the United States must re-authorize the Refugee Resettlement Program every year before determining the cap or limit on the number of refugees who will be admitted to the United States.
