Health Information Technology Adoption Reports

In 2006, the 1998 public reporting law was updated to include physicians (doctors). The first physician reporting effort is the Physician Health Information Techonology (HIT) Survey, which asks physicians how they are using computers to help care for their patients. Survey responses are required from all physicians in Rhode Island who care for patients.

Survey Timeline

  • 2007: HEALTH developed the survey based on the work of Drs. David Bates and Steven Simon in Massachusetts. Local healthcare leaders also shaped the survey. Key partners included the Rhode Island Quality Institute, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, and UnitedHealthCare of New England.
  • 2008: The survey was tested with all physicians. Results for the Survey Measures were shared with each physician, but otherwise kept private.  Overall results are available below.
  • 2009: Beginning with the 2009 Physician HIT Survey, physicians’ answers are being collected and publicly released each year. Public use data files are available below to support other HIT projects, without increasing the number of surveys physicians need to complete.

Physician Report
The 2009 Physician Report is the first individual-level annual report from the Physician HIT Survey. The report includes physicians’ results for the five Survey Measures. Physicians are listed alphabetically based on their last name.

Summary Reports
Overall results, including response rates and averages for the Survey Measure, are available:

Because there are slight differences in how the data were collected and analyzed in 2008 and in 2009, HEALTH will begin looking at data trends (how the measures change over time) beginning with the 2010 Summary Report, expected in March 2010.
