Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)The BRFSS is an annual state-based telephone survey of randomly selected non-institutionalized Rhode Island adults (ages 18 and older). The BRFSS monitors certain health conditions, access to health care, and behavioral risks that contribute to the leading causes of disease and death among adults in the United States. It is administered in all 50 states and 4 U.S. territories with funding and methodological specifications provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Rhode Island has participated in the BRFSS since 1984. Topics include, but are not limited to: general health status, asthma, diabetes, weight, physical activity, tobacco use, fruit and vegetable consumption, alcohol use, health care coverage, oral health, cancer screening, immunization, mental health, disability, blood pressure, arthritis, and quality of life.
