Rhode Island Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES)

The CODES project makes use of data collected independently for other purposes. The surveillance data are abstracted from:

  • Crash records reported by police to Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RI DOT)
  • Ambulance Run Reports reported to the Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  • Hospital Discharge Data reported to the Center for Health Data and Analysis
  • Emergency Department data (when they become available)

CODES is a collaboration among the State offices that collect these data sets and is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). CODES uses information theory and probability theory to link records. CODES projects are active in about 26 states. Rhode Island has participated since October 2000.
