Hospital Discharge Data - Public Use File

Public use data files specifications are being revised and will be available in February 2007. Please check back then to request public use data files. In the meantime, contact Jay Buechner at (401)222-2550 or Jay.Buechner@health.ri.gov with questions regarding data content of public use data files or Alice Tillinghast at (401)222-2550 or Alice.Tillinghast@health.ri.gov with questions regarding ordering and cost of public use data files.

File Layouts for Public Use Files

File layouts for public use files are available for the following periods, based on hospital fiscal years. Fiscal year data files with consistent data elements are grouped together. Coding changes may be made within the file layouts grouped below and will be indicated in the layout. If data elements are added or removed from the data file, a new file layout is prepared. The file layouts are available as Word documents. The public use files on CD will include SAS program language for converting the data files to SAS system files. The file layouts above document the valid codes for each data element as well as the file structure. The grid below documents the valid codes for each data element by fiscal year in one table. The grid is useful for looking at coding changes across fiscal years to assist in trend analysis.
