Lyme Disease

Anaplasmosis

Anaplasmosis is a disease that affects cattle and sheep, primarily in tropical and sub-tropical regions.  The disease is spread both by ticks and flies.  Anaplasmosis is a disease of adult livestock, and symptoms will only appear in cattle over 18 months old.

Symptoms: Animals will first experience an increase in body temperature, which may lead to death before further symptoms occur.  After a few days, they will experience a loss of appetite, anemia, and red blood cell loss.  Affected cattle will usually either die or begin recovery within the first four days after symptoms begin.

Treatment: Animals can be treated for anaplasmosis only in the early stages of the disease.  Typical treatment is with tetracycline, but this may not completely eradicate the bacteria.
