Lyme Disease

Ehrlichiosis

Canine ehrlichiosis is a disease that affects dogs.  It is transmitted by brown dog ticks and is found in regions where the tick is found.

Symptoms: Dogs infected with ehrlichiosis can go for years without experiencing any major symptoms of the disease.  They may go for long periods of time experiencing only occasional and mild anemia and loss of appetite.  When the disease progresses, however, symptoms include fever, discharge from the eyes and nose, loss of appetite, depression, weight loss, anemia, loss of body condition, loss of platelets (making blood less able to clot), respiratory problems, lameness, and neurologic disorders.  These symptoms may become chronic in later stages of the disease.

Treatment: Doxycycline and tetracycline are often used to treat ehrlichiosis.  Severely anemic dogs may require a blood transfusion.
