Lyme Disease

Haemobartonellosis

Haemobartonellosis is a disease that affects dogs and cats.  Bites from brown dog ticks and fleas can transmit the disease.

Symptoms: In dogs: Most otherwise healthy dogs infected with haemobartonellosis do not experience any symptoms.  However, dogs with removed spleens, compromised immune symptoms, or other infections (such as ehrlichiosis) may develop anemia.

In cats: Most otherwise healthy cats infected with haemobartonellosis do not experience any symptoms.  However, cats already suffering from feline leukemia virus or feline immunodeficiency virus may experience anemia, weight loss, depression, jaundice, and death.

Treatment: Haemobartonellosis is often treated with tetracycline, oxytetracycline, or a similar antibiotic.  However, it may not eliminate the bacteria completely.
