TB Prevention and Control

Health Care Facilities

The state requires nursing facilities and hospitals to implement TB infection control programs including the following components:

  • Risk Assessment
  • Development of TB infection control plan facility
  • Early identification, treatment, and isolation of strongly suspected or confirmed infectious TB cases
  • Effective engineering controls
  • An appropriate respiratory protection program
  • Health care worker TB training, education, counseling, and screening
  • Evaluation of the TB control program’s effectiveness
  • Development and implementation of protocols for discharge planning that include infection control components

These rules and regulations are based on the CDC’s Guidelines for Preventing the Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Health-Care Facilities, 1994. These guidelines are in the process of being updated, and revisions are likely to be published in 2005.
