West Nile Virus

Surveillance For West Nile Virus 

Arbovirus Surveillance
Rhode Island, 2007

The 2007 surveillance season runs from June 1 - October 31, 2007.

Arbovirus = arthropod-borne virus
WNV = West Nile Virus
EEE = Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Surveillance methodology for the 2007 season was conducted in the same manner as detailed in reports from previous years.
Routine collection and testing of mosquitoes for WNV and EEE virus was done from June through late September. 
The Rhode Island State Laboratory performs testing for WNV and EEE virus infection in human specimens year-round.

Mosquito Pools (Pool = group of mosquitoes):
Five (5) pools of mosquitoes have tested positive for WNV in Rhode Island.
No pools of mosquitoes tested positive for EEE in Rhode Island.

Humans:
One case of West Nile virus fever was reported in 2007.
The 42 year old female from Bristol County was CONFIRMED by the Rhode Island State Laboratory as a case of West Nile FEVER (not neuroinvasive disease) with an onset of 8/23/07.

New Hampshire reported a case of EEE in a foreign national (Scotland), who has been diagnosed as a confirmed case of EEE with a history of extensive travel and mosquito exposures while fishing in New England (mainly RI and NH) in the 2 weeks prior to onset on Aug 31. The case will be recorded in the UK, as a travel acquired importation. The exact location where exposure occurred is not likely to be pin-pointed. 

No human cases of EEE have been identified in Rhode Island.

Equine:
No horses have tested positive for WNV or EEE.

Avian:
The dead bird surveillance program was discontinued in 2006. No birds have tested positive for WNV or EEE in 2007.
