Diabetes Prevention and Control ProgramSchoolbased Glucagon ToolkitIn July of 2008 a law was passed in the RI General Assembly allowing non-medical personnel to administer glucagon to intervene in a diabetes-related emergency if the school nurse is not available. Glucagon is a medication administered to people with diabetes when their blood sugar level drops dangerously low and the person is exhibiting symptoms that may lead to brain injury and death. Personnel that will perform the training on Glucagon administration should use the training materials in the glucagon Tool Kit. The Tool Kit includes: an introductory memorandum from the Department of Health, the American Diabetes Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Glucagon Emergency Administration Training Power Point Presentation, an Authorization Form for Glucagon Administration by Non-Nursing Personnel, link to a Glucagon Training Video, and a Certification Form of Training in Glucagon Administration For Volunteer Personnel in Schools. Glucagon injector demonstration kits are available for any individuals from the Pharmaceutical Companies Lilly and Novo Nordisk. To obtain kits contact the company directly.
Use your School Physician as a resource to help you identify personnel to assist with training. |
