Initiative for a Healthy Weight

What has IHW accomplished so far?

IHW received CDC funding under a previous cooperative agreement in 2000. IHW achieved a number of successes under its previous CDC cooperative agreement:

  • Established a successful public-private partnership of over 100 members to develop recommendations for addressing the Rhode Island obesity epidemic.
  • Implemented and evaluated a pilot school policy and environmental intervention.
  • Funded five programs through mini-grants.
  • Helped develop and disseminate the New England Coalition for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (NECON) Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Overweight and Obesity in New England.
  • Received the World Health Day 2002 Award from the American Association for World Health/World Health Organization, recognizing the program’s leadership in evaluating and implementing statewide nutrition and physical activity programs.

Under the current funding cycle, IHW has:

  • Completed The Burden of Overweight and Obesity in Rhode Island word Word pdf PDF
  • Obtained a permanent seat on the State Transportation Advisory Committee for the Department of Health.
  • Helped develop new recommendations to support safe pedestrian and bicycle transportation in the state transportation plan.
  • Partnered with Rhode to Health Coalition to create a year-round walking program.
  • Worked with Healthy Schools Coalition to promote nutrition guidelines for school vending and a la carte foods.
  • Supported the Department of Education in submission of Team Nutrition grant.
  • Supported legislation mandating District School Health Councils and plans.
  • Initiated collaboration between Brown University’s Institute for Community Health Promotion for grant submission to increase breastfeeding rates in WIC population and with Kids First for school-based intervention.
  • Worked with Department of Education to assist the Providence Recreation Department to improve the nutritional quality of the Summer Food Service Program.
  • Collaborated with the WIC staff to analyze program data regarding overweight, dietary intake and breastfeeding by community.
  • Identified a target community for program intervention and collected qualitative and quantitative data on this community.
