The Obesity Planning Council
A Successful Public-Private Partnership

Formed by IHW to help guide Rhode Island’s response to the obesity epidemic, the Obesity Planning Council (OPC) consisted of just over 100 members representing the fields of nutrition, physical activity, education, as well as various Rhode Island communities. Members represented a number of Rhode Island agencies.

The OPC provided IHW with valuable recommendations and guidance on program, policy, and environmental interventions for reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity. OPC members recognized the importance of supporting policies and environmental changes that will support healthy eating and active living.

Based on OPC’s recommendations, IHW is currently developing Rhode Island’s Plan for Healthy Eating and Active Living. For a preview of the state plan and IHW’s role in the plan, download Rhode Island’s Plan for Healthy Eating and Active Living: Objectives pdf.
