Oral HealthOral Disease PreventionDental Sealants* Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings which are painted on the chewing surfaces of the molars (back teeth) and act as a barrier, protecting the teeth from cavity-causing bacteria. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs in the back teeth because the chewing surfaces contain narrow pits and grooves that trap food and plaque and can't be cleaned by toothbrushing. Sealants cover these pits and grooves to prevent decay.
