Suicide and Suicide Attempts in Rhode Island: Facts and Figures

Suicide and Suicide Attempts in Rhode Island: 

  • Suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death among 20-24 year olds and 25-29 year olds between 1993 and 1997 and it accounted for over 20% of all injury deaths in the period 1992-96.
  • During 1992-1996, the average number of suicides was 83 at an annual rate of 9.6 deaths per 100,000 people. 
  • Self-inflicted injury was the second leading cause of injury-related hospital discharge among 10-24 year olds and the third leading cause of injury-related hospital discharge among those people 65 and older during 1992-1996.
  • According to 1992-1996 data, males are four times more likely to complete suicide but females are more likely to attempt suicide.
  • The average annual suicide rate for non-Hispanic white and black residents was approximately 10/100,000 people during the period 1992-1996. 
  • According to the 1997 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), 24% of high school students in Rhode Island seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months compared to 20.5% nationwide. Ten percent attempted suicide in the past 12 months compared to 7.7% nationwide.
