Injury including violence (both self inflicted and interpersonal) is the leading cause of death for Rhode Island Youth. Overall, Suicide is the third leading cause of death for Rhode Islanders ages 15-24. Only motor vehicle crashes and homicide kill more Rhode Island youth. The Rhode Island Department of Health Injury Prevention Program convened a state suicide prevention planning team, which issued its recommendations for youth in February 2002 . Since that time, the Injury Advisory Council, a “blue ribbon” panel convened by the Director of Health, identified suicide as one of the three injury prevention priorities for the state.
