Safe Rhode Island:
Violence and Injury Prevention Program
Violence Prevention
VSIP: Violence Surveillance Integration Program
This program, funded by the CDC, is a supplement to our larger Core Injury Prevention Program. The purpose of this program is to support two specific activities:
- the development of a state plan for integrating basic violence injury surveillance into existing injury surveillance in a sustainable manner
- to collect standardized indicators of various types of violence
SRI has a history of tracking such violence indicators as homicide, suicide, self-harm hospitalization, and hospitalization for assault. The VSIP will allow SRI to create a state-specific plan for future violence surveillance, which will ensure that these key violence indicators continue to be tracked into the future. This project emphasizes the importance of using a data-driven, public health approach to violence and injury prevention. By utilizing data, SRI is better able to determine the populations and communities in which violence occurs more frequently, and target prevention accordingly.
