Asbestos Control ProgramHomeowner InformationThe use of asbestos in a wide variety of construction and building materials has resulted in the presence of asbestos in many residential homes. This is particularly true of homes constructed prior to 1970. Asbestos may be present in steam pipe and boiler insulation, vermiculite attic insulation, resilient floor tiles If these materials are in good condition and are not disturbed, they do not present an immediate health risk to you or your family. However, if your home contains damaged asbestos containing materials or if you disturb these materials during renovations and/or remodeling, asbestos fibers may be released which will create an exposure risk. Please visit the Health Effects page for additional information. The only way of determining if a building material contains asbestos, is by sample analysis. The Asbestos Control Program certifies both consultant inspectors, and analytical labs that may collect and analyze samples for asbestos content. You may obtain these lists by visiting our Licensee Lists page. Although one and two family residential properties are generally exempted from the Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for Asbestos Control, damaged or improperly disturbed asbestos containing building materials in these homes can present a significant health risk to the occupants. Therefore, the RI Department of Health recommends that asbestos containing materials in these homes be maintained intact, and in good condition, and if repair or removal is desired, properly trained professionals perform the job. In addition, the RI Department of Environmental Management regulates the disposal of asbestos waste. If you would like to discuss concerns regarding asbestos in your home, or request a copy of the “Asbestos in Your Home” brochure, please contact the RI Asbestos Program at (401) 222-3601.
