Radon Control Program

The RI Radon Control Program is located in the Department of Health's Healthy Homes and Environment Team.

The primary mission of the Radon Control Program is to protect the health of the Rhode Island public by preventing exposure to elevated concentrations of radon gas. The Rhode Island Radon Act  (Title 23-61) is designed to reduce the incidence of lung cancer due to radon/radon progeny exposure in Rhode Island to the greatest extent possible. To achieve this goal, the Act established a comprehensive Radon program in the Department of Health.

The Radon Control Program staff is responsible for implementing the provisions of the Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for Radon Control  (R23-61-RC) which include:

  • Requirements for measurement of radon in air levels in both public and high priority building (such as child care facilities and schools).
  • Specific procedures for certification and licensure of radon training courses, analytical services, measurement consultants and businesses, and mitigation contractors, specialists and workers.
  • Protocols for measurement of radon in air and mitigation of radon in air in public and high priority buildings.
