Radon Control Program

What Is Radon?

radonRadon is a naturally occurring, odorless, colorless radioactive element that is a gas at room temperature and pressure. Radon is produced by the decay of Uranium deposits that occur naturally in rocks and soil. Radon is found in almost all buildings and homes, and is considered to present a public health risk when the concentrations exceed 4.0 picoCuries per liter in air. Radon may still pose a health risk at levels below 4.0 pCi/L. The only way of determining if your home has an elevated concentration of Radon is to conduct a Radon Test. If high levels are Radon are found, the problem can often be fixed inexpensively.

The danger that Radon presents is through inhalation. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Please see our Health Effects page for more information.
