Rhode Island Breastfeeding Data

  • The national Healthy People 2010 Objectives for breastfeeding are that 75% of women leave the hospital breastfeeding, 50% continue to breastfeed for 6 months, 25% continue to breastfeed for 12 months, 40% exclusively breastfeed at 3 months, and 17% exclusively breastfeed at 6 months by the year 2010.
  • In 2006, 74.5% of women reported that they had ever breastfed their infants (RI Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System).
  • In 2007, 71.6% of prenatal women intended to breastfeed and 58.1% intended to exclusively breastfeed at hospital discharge (RI Newborn Developmental Risk Assessment Screening).
  • Breastfeeding is more common among higher income, educated, older, white and married women.
