KIDSNET

WHO USES KIDSNET?

KIDSNET information is used by:

  • Rhode Island health professionals to make sure children get the right screening and care; and
  • Rhode Island health programs to track the health of children in the state.

To do this, certain health professionals and programs may become authorized users of KIDSNET. Authorized users have access to KIDSNET on a “need to know” basis. Each authorized user has a user ID and password that allows them to view information based on their need. They may use KIDSNET to:

  • View a child’s immunization record;
  • Check a child’s results from lead and other screening tests; and
  • See if a child participates in preventive health programs such as WIC and Early Intervention.

Who can become an authorized user?

  • All of Rhode Island’s pediatric providers can become authorized users of KIDSNET.

By April 2007, 152 out of 176 pediatric providers in the state were participating in KIDSNET. The remaining sites are being invited to participate.

Other authorized users of KIDSNET include:

  • Head Start agencies
  • Lead centers that provide case management to lead-poisoned children
  • Comprehensive Child Care Services Programs
  • School nurse teachers
  • Family Outreach Program
  • Early Intervention
  • KIDSNET staff at the Department of Health
  • Selected staff from WIC, the Immunization Program, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, Newborn Screening Program, and Vital Records at the Department of Health

See the confidentiality section for more information about how KIDSNET protects the information in its system.
