Family Planning in Rhode Island

HIV Counseling, Testing, and Referral

HIV counseling, testing and referral services are available through most family planning agencies in Rhode Island. They are offered at no cost and are confidential. No cost anonymous testing is available at three family planning agencies (VNS of Newport & Bristol Counties in Newport, Tri-Town Health Center in Johnston, and Family Health Services in Cranston & Coventry). Click here for other anonymous testing sites in Rhode Island.

Confidential Testing

The confidential testing site records your name with the test result. Your record will be kept secret from everybody except medical personnel. You should ask who will know the result and how it will be stored. If you have your HIV antibody test done confidentially, you can sign a release form to have your test result sent to your doctor.

Anonymous Testing

No one asks your name. You are the only one who can tell anyone else your result.

If you plan to become pregnant, counseling and testing is even more important. Without treatment, an HIV-infected woman has about a 1-in-4 chance of infecting her baby during pregnancy or delivery. Medical treatment can reduce this to about a 1-in-12 chance.
