Do I have to be married or a U.S. citizen to apply for WIC?
No, you do not have to be married or a U.S. citizen to apply for WIC.

Can fathers enroll their children in WIC?
Fathers who have children under age five years old could enroll their children in the WIC program. Fathers can bring their children to appointments, talk with a nutritionist, and receive WIC checks for their children. Fathers do not receive WIC for themselves.

Are WIC services free?
Yes, WIC is free to all who are on the program.

What does WIC count as income?
WIC counts all income before taxes of anyone who lives in the household. WIC also counts income from other sources such as Social Security, public assistance, alimony or child support payments, and unemployment compensation. If you have questions about income, call the Family Health Information line at 1-800-942-7434.

Where should I go for WIC services?
There are 26 WIC sites in Rhode Island.  You can go to any WIC site that is convenient to you and your family.  Call the HEALTH Information Line at 1-800-942-7434 to find the WIC site nearest you.

What will happen when I go to my first appointment?
You will:

  • Fill out program forms
  • Meet with a nutritionist who will talk with you about you and your child’s health and nutrition

What should I bring to my first WIC appointment?

  • Proof of income (paycheck stub, a recent tax return, a letter from your employer)
  • Proof of address (utility bill, rent receipt, etc.)
  • Proof of identification (driver’s license, birth certificate, passport).

If you participate in Rite Care or Rite Share, Medicaid, Family Independence Program, Food Stamps, or Katie Beckett, you must also bring:

  • Proof of participation

How often do I have to go to the WIC agency?
You will be asked to go to the WIC agency every one to three months to pick up your WIC checks. Your local WIC staff will let you know what you need to bring for each visit.

What do I do if my WIC checks are lost or stolen?
WIC cannot replace lost or stolen checks. Protect them as you would cash or personal checks. If lost or stolen, contact your local WIC agency to report loss.

Where can I shop with my WIC checks?
Most chain stores in Rhode Island and many neighborhood stores take WIC checks. The staff at your local WIC agency can help you find stores in your area that accept WIC checks. You can also call the Family Health Information line at 1-800-942-7434.

Can I use coupons when I buy WIC foods at the store?
Yes, you can use coupons and store savings cards when buying your WIC foods.  You may also get store sale promotions when purchasing with WIC, for example, buy one get one free.

Who do I call if I have problems when using my WIC checks at the store?
Please let us know. Call your local WIC agency with any problems or complaints.

What should I do if I move to another state?
If you are on the WIC Program in Rhode Island, you will be able to get WIC when you move. It is best to call your WIC office before you move. They can give you the phone number of a WIC office near your new home and complete the necessary paperwork for you to take your new WIC site.
