How to Become a Licensed Lead Professional

Attend an initial training session and pass the state exam

Most licensed lead professions require individuals to take an initial training course, pass a state licensing exam, and take a blood lead test before applying for their initial license. Specific training and licensing requirements vary by lead hazard control, lead hazard reduction, and lead inspection professional.

Submit an initial application

To apply for an initial license, mail your license application and a copy of your initial training certificate to the address noted on the application. Please allow 15 days for your application to be processed. If the application is complete, the affidavit has been signed, and the license fee is correct, you will be notified to come to the Department for a photo ID.

Attend a refresher training session

Most licensed lead professions require individuals to take a refresher training course and and pay a fee to renew their licenses. Specific refresher training and renewal requirements vary by lead hazard control, lead hazard reduction, and lead inspection professional.

Renew your license

You will receive a renewal application in the mail 60 days before your license expires. This application is pre-populated with your information. Do not use a blank initial application form to renew an existing license. Applications must be mailed to the Department with a copy of your refresher training certificate.

The Department cannot process renewal applications on a walk-through basis. Please allow 15 days for your renewal application to be processed. If your application is complete and the license fee is correct, you will receive a photo ID in the mail or be notified to come have a picture taken at the Department.
