Healthy Weight and Asthma

Adults with asthma are more likely to be obese than adults without asthma.  Patients with asthma are often less active due to difficulty breathing.  An improved diet and moderate physical activity can lessen the impact of asthma symptoms.

A healthy weight will help you. . .

  • Improve your lung function.

Tips for persons with asthma . . .

  • Talk to your doctor before beginning a physical activity and nutrition program.
  • Swimming is often the sport of choice for asthmatics due to the warm, humid atmosphere and the swimmers horizontal positioning.
  • Walking, leisure biking and hiking are less likely to cause exercise-induced asthma.
  • Cold weather activities such as cross-country skiing and ice hockey are more likely to aggravate airways.
  • Consult with your doctor and health care providers about medication needs.  Medication needs might change based on your asthma triggers such as seasonal allergies and extreme temperatures.
  • Track your peak flows for any changes.
  • Be cautious of exercise and physical activity induced asthma.
