Office of HIV/AIDS & Viral HepatitisInformation for ParentsHow can parents help prevent HIV/AIDS? Parents can help prevent HIV by taking an active role in the education of their children. Helping a child to grow up to be a responsible, healthy adult is one of a parent’s greatest challenges. When parents take an active role, they can meet that challenge. Research shows that teens are less likely to have sex at an early age, if they feel close to their parents and parents clearly communicate strong values. Surveys also show that young people actually want to talk with their parents about tough issues like sex. They will listen to parents more than anyone else about these issues.
