Information for Providers

Ryan White AIDS Drug Assistance Program

The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) is a federally funded program administered by the Rhode Island Department of Health. The program provides FDA-approved HIV drugs to low-income people who have limited or no coverage from private insurance or Medicaid.

The ADAP program provides only HIV drugs that are listed on the ADAP Formulary pdf. The RI Department of Health and the AIDS Clinical Task Force work together to determine which drugs are listed on the formulary, considering issues such as patient needs and funding availability.

To be eligible for the program, a person must be a Rhode Island resident, have HIV, and have an income less than 4 times (400%) the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). For example, for a family of one, 400% of the poverty level is $38,280. For more information about the poverty guidelines, go to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Poverty Guidelines.

To apply for ADAP, the health care provider and the patient must complete an ADAP Application Form pdf and fax it to the Department of Health. The Department of Health staff will determine the patient’s eligibility for the program and contact the patient’s pharmacy to enroll him/her in the program. For most people, enrollment into ADAP takes less than 48 hours.
