Hospital Information for the Public

Management of Information

The goal of the management information function is to obtain, manage, and use information to improve patient outcomes and individual and hospital performance in patient care, governance, management, and support processes.

  • The hospital plans and designs information-management processes to meet internal and external information needs.
  • Confidentiality, security, and integrity of data and information are maintained.
  • Uniform data definitions and data capture methods are used whenever possible.
  • Decision-makers and other appropriate staff members are educated and trained in the principles of information management.
  • Transmission of data and information is timely and accurate.
  • Adequate integration and interpretation capabilities are provided.
  • The hospital defines, captures, analyzes, transforms, transmits, and reports patient-specific data and information related to care processes and outcomes.
  • The hospital collects and analyzes aggregate data to support patient care and operations.
  • The hospital provides systems, resources, and services to meet its needs for knowledge-based information in patient care, education, research, and management.
  • Comparative performance data and information are defined, analyzed, transmitted, reported, and used consistent with national and state guidelines for data set parity and connectivity.

Information Management Planning

This area reflects an evaluation of whether the hospital ensures the accuracy of its information, especially information on individual patients; whether information access is balanced with appropriate security and confidentiality safeguards; whether information supports continuity of care throughout the hospital and between the hospital and other providers; and whether the hospital's quality improvement activities have information management support.

Availability of Patient-Specific Information

This area reflects an evaluation of how the hospital maintains this information in each patient's medical record on a timely basis to support and document the patient's care in all care settings.

Data Collection and Analysis

This area reflects an evaluation of how the hospital collects, analyzes, and reports data to support patient care, decision making, management, analysis of trends, comparisons with other hospitals, and performance improvement activities.

Literature to Support Decision Making

This area reflects an evaluation of the hospital's provision of resource materials to support patient care, education, performance improvement, research, and management.

Use of Comparative Information

This area reflects an evaluation of how the hospital supports the exchange and comparison of clinical and management information with other health care organizations.
