Nursing

This category pertains to the activities of the nurse executive.

Nursing services are directed by a nurse executive who is a registered nurse qualified by advanced education and management experience.

The nurse executive has the authority and responsibility for establishing standards of nursing practice.

Nursing policies and procedures, nursing standards of patient care, and standards of nursing practice are approved by the nurse executive or a designee(s).

The nurse executive and other nursing leaders participate with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical areas in planning, promoting, and conducting organizationwide performance-improvement activities.

Surveyors assess whether the hospital has designated an appropriately qualified nurse executive; whether the nurse executive has the authority and responsibility for establishing the hospital's standards of nursing practice; whether nursing standards and policies have been implemented; and whether nursing standards and policies were developed with input from nursing staff.
