Nursing

This category pertains to the activities of the nurse executive.

  • Nursing services are directed by a nurse executive who is a registered nurse qualified by advanced education and management experience.
  • The nurse executive has the authority and responsibility for establishing standards of nursing practice.
  • Nursing policies and procedures, nursing standards of patient care, and standards of nursing practice are approved by the nurse executive or a designee(s).
  • The nurse executive and other nursing leaders participate with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical areas in planning, promoting, and conducting organizationwide performance-improvement activities.

Nursing

This area reflects an evaluation of the nurse executive's oversight of nursing services.

Surveyors assess whether the hospital has designated an appropriately qualified nurse executive; whether the nurse executive has the authority and responsibility for establishing the hospital's standards of nursing practice; whether nursing standards and policies have been implemented; and whether nursing standards and policies were developed with input from nursing staff.
