Hospital Information for the Public Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Infection The goal of this function is to identify and reduce risks of acquiring and transmitting infections among patients, employees, physicians, and other licensed independent practitioners, contract service workers, volunteers, students, and visitors.
- The organization uses a coordinated process to reduce the risks of endemic and epidemic nosocomial infections in patients and health care workers.
- Case finding and identification of demographically important nosocomial infections provide surveillance data.
- The hospital reports, when appropriate, information about infections both internally and to public health agencies.
- The hospital takes action to prevent or reduce the risk of nosocomial infections in patients, employees, and visitors.
- The hospital takes action to control outbreaks of nosocomial infections when they are identified.
- The hospitals infection control process is designed to lower the risks and to improve (proportional) rates or (numerical) trends of epidemiological significant infections.
Infection Control This area reflects an evaluation of whether the hospital has a comprehensive organizationwide program for the surveillance, prevention, and control of infection; that the surveillance program includes all patient care and support services; that the program uses the information it collects to prevent infections; that infectious wastes are appropriately handled; and that sterilization procedures are properly performed. We do not assess the rates of infection that may occur at any given hospital. |
