Radiological Health Program

radiological healthThe RI Radiological Health Program is located in the Department of Health's Division of Environmental and Health Services Regulation, Office of Facilities Regulation.

The primary mission of the Program is to assure the safe use of radioactive materials, x-ray equipment, and tanning equipment in order to protect the Rhode Island public and workers from excessive exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation through a licensing and targeted enforcement program.

The Radiation Control Program staff is responsible for implementing the provisions of the Rules and Regulations for the Control of Radiation (R23-1.3-RAD) and the Rules and Regulations for the Registration of Tanning Facilities (R23-68-TAN).

No individual or facility is allowed to use radioactive materials in Rhode Island without a current Specific, General or Reciprocity license issued by this Agency.

Registration is required for any facility/location that: has x-ray equipment, provides installation and/or servicing of x-ray equipment and any individual who provides physics services.  If you possess a registration and have more than one location where x-ray equipment is possessed a separate registration is required.

Registration is required for any facility/location that provides tanning services.  Tanning registrations, which have a change of ownership require the filing of a new registration application.

NOTE:  Checks must be made payable to the Treasurer State of Rhode Island.
