Frequently Asked Questions On Continuing Education Requirements

Q.

What will I have to do to meet the Board's requirement for continuing education?

A.

Effective March 1, 2006, at the time of license renewal or reinstatement, you will be expected to do the following:

 

  • sign an attestation statement at the time of your license renewal attesting to the completion of your continuing education requirements

Q.

How many continuing education units does the Board require?

A.

The Board requires Ten (10) continuing education hours per renewal cycle (every two Years).

Q.

Some courses are offered in units of hours. How is this measured to meet the  Board’s continuing education requirement?

A.

One continuing education unit (CEU) is equivalent to ten (10) continuing education hours.  One continuing education hour is equivalent to one (1) contact hour.

Q.

Where can I take the nursing courses?

A.

Any nursing course that is accepted or approved by a nursing organization, such as Rhode Island State Nurse Association (RISNA), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), approved nursing schools or any other recognized professional nursing organization.

  • Online courses that meet the above criteria are acceptable.

Q.

How will the Board know if I completed my continuing education requirement?

A.

The Board will do random audits for compliance to the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act.  You should retain documentation of your course completion for four (4) Years (two renewal cycles).

  • Failure to produce satisfactory documentation of completion of the requirements of the Nurse Practice Act constitutes grounds for disciplinary actions.

Q.

I am no longer working as a nurse but will renew my license. Do I have to meet the continuing education requirement ?

A.

Yes, anyone who renews his or her license must meet the continuing education requirement.

The Department may extend for only one (1) six (6) month period the continuing education requirement if the Department is satisfied that applicant has suffered hardship which prevented meeting the educational requirements. If applicable, you may request an extension in writing, submit evidence of your hardship and send to the Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education.
