Immunization Program

June 12, 2006
To: Vaccines for Children (VFC) Provider Sites
Re: Introduction of Rotavirus and MMRV Vaccines

Beginning June 15, 2006, VFC (Vaccines For Children) enrolled providers may order Rotavirus and MMRV vaccines, with their monthly order, through the state supplied childhood vaccine program. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued the following guidelines for use:

Rotavirus (RV) Vaccine RotaTeq CPT Code: 90680

Guidelines for Use
On May 31, 2006, the ACIP issued provisional recommendations for rotavirus vaccine for routine vaccination of infants to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis (www.cdc.gov/nip/recs/provisional_recs/rotavirus-child.pdf). Infants should be routinely immunized with 3 doses of RV (administered orally) at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. The first dose should be administered between 6-12 weeks of age. Subsequent doses should be administered at 4 to 10 week intervals, and all 3 doses of vaccine should be administered by 32 weeks of age. The RV series should not be given to a child who has not received the first dose by 13 weeks of age. See package insert for additional information.

Combined Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella (MMRV) Vaccine Proquad CPT Code: 90710

Guidelines for Use
MMRV is a live, injectable vaccine (administered subcutaneously). Current ACIP recommendations are that children aged aged 12 months -- to 12 years receive 2 doses of MMR vaccine at least 1 month apart and 1 dose of varicella vaccine. MMRV vaccine can decrease the number of injections received by children when all of the component antigens are indicated for administration. One dose of MMRV vaccine should be administered on or after the first birthday, preferably as soon as the child becomes eligible for vaccination (www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5447a4.htm). MMRV should not be routinely administered for the second dose of MMR except when a dose of a varicella vaccine is also indicated(www.cdc.gov/nip/vaccine/varicella/varicella_acip_recs.pdf). See package insert for additional information.

Note: As with varicella vaccine, MMRV must be stored in a freezer at an average temperature of 5°F (–15°C) or colder, and will be shipped directly from the manufacturer to the provider.

CPT Codes and KIDSNET
Please report these new vaccines to KIDSNET by using the correct CPT codes provided above by sending electronically electronic submission or by documenting the CPT code on the KIDSNET Immunization Data Sheet.

Vaccine Information Statements (VIS)
VIS (there is no “MMRV” VIS available to order-use separate MMR and varicella VIS) are available where you pick up your vaccines or by calling the HEALTH Information Line at (800) 942-7434. Please note that for MMRV, a separate VIS for MMR and varicella must be given. You can also order online at http://kidsnet.health.ri.gov/forms/divisions/family_health/form_iz_ed.html. To print a copy go to http://www.immunize.org/vis/index.htm.
