Re: Restrictions on state-supplied MCV4 (Menactra) Resolved

Restrictions on the state supply of Menactra vaccine have been resolved. Effective immediately, providers may begin ordering vaccine for all of the recommended immunization cohorts:

  • 11-12 year olds
  • Adolescents entering high school (15 years of age)
  • College freshman living in dormitories
  • Other children (11 years of age and older) at increased risk for meningococcal disease including:
    • Children who travel to or reside in countries in which Neisseria meningitidis is hyperendemic or epidemic, particularly if contact with the local population will be prolonged see http://www.cdc.gov/travel/menin-guidelines.htm;
    • Children who have terminal complement component deficiencies; and
    • Children who have anatomic or functional asplenia.

    Note: Because Menactra is only licensed for children 11 years of age or older, Menomune (meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine-MPSV4) is recommended for children 2-10 years of age who fall into one of the risk categories listed above.

The CPT code for MCV4 (Menactra) is 90734.

The Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for MCV4 is available by calling the HEALTH Information Line at (800) 942-7434. You can also order online at http://kidsnet.health.ri.gov/forms/divisions/family_health/form_iz_ed.html. To print a copy, go to http://www.immunize.org/vis/index.htm.

To review the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for the prevention and control of meningococcal see: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5407a1.htm and http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/acip-list-sup/acip-sup-mening.htm.
