Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a job at the Department of Health?

To apply, you must send a resume and cover letter.  The cover letter should include title of the job and the position number (this number is listed at the upper right hand corner of the job notice).

Do I need to fill out an employment form to apply for a job?

No. Your resume and cover letter are enough.  At the time of an interview, you will be asked to complete an employment form and an affirmative action card.

If I am selected for a job, do I have to start at the lowest pay rate?

Most jobs require that the employee start at the beginning pay rate for the job.  Some jobs affiliated with the NAGE (National Association of Government Employees) union may start at a higher pay rate depending upon the employee’s experience.

Application Period – Is there a grace period?

For union positions only, there is a 3 working day grace period after the end date for applications.

Restrictions/Limitations – What does limited funding mean?

Limited funding usually applies to jobs funded by federal grant dollars.  When grants come up for renewal, funding for the position is dependent upon federal approval.

On the job announcement, I noticed that there is a check that a civil service list exists for the position.  What does this mean?

This means that a state exam was given for this job and that a list exists based on those who took the test.  People who are on the list will be considered first for the job.

How do I know when a civil service exam will be given?

The Department of Administration announces and administers the exam for selected jobs.  Exams are announced in the Providence Sunday Journal, employment advertisement section.

How do I get notified for an interview, by mail or a phone call?

Applicants are usually notified by a phone call from the Department of Health to schedule an interview.

If not selected for an interview, will I be notified?

Applicants who are not selected for interviews will be notified by the office conducting the interviews.

If a job is a union job, can I still apply for the job?

Yes.  After the Department has satisfied union obligations, any qualified applicant not in the union can be considered for employment.

Sometimes a job posting will have LTPS and a date.  What does this mean?

LTPS is leave to protect status.  This means that a current state employee has a leave from this position and can return to the position on the date designated in the posting.
