Rhode Island, which has the fifth-oldest housing stock in the nation, has one of its most serious lead problems. The rate of lead poisoned children in Rhode Island is over three times the United States average.
Lead exposure can come from a number of sources, including soil and water, but the most prevalent exposure in Rhode Island comes from lead-based paint found in residences built prior to 1978.
The mission of the Environmental Lead Program, through home assessments, regulatory enforcement, and licensing, is to protect the public, specifically children under the age of six, from lead in the environment.
Through enforcement of the Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for Lead Poisoning Prevention, Real Estate Disclosure Rule, and the Pre-Renovation Education Rule, the Environmental Lead Program continues to reduce the incidence of lead poisoning in Rhode Island, and create a safer living environment for all Rhode Islanders.
