HEALTH Department Announces Adult Flu Shot Sites; Eligible Adults Must Bring Proof of Age or Doctor’s Note

Today, the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) announced the initial schedule for community adult flu shot sites. HEALTH is working in partnership with a number of organizations to distribute the flu vaccine to high priority adults in Rhode Island. By working together, all these state and community partners want to make sure that the vaccine gets to people who need it the most. The vaccination sites are designed for the following high priority groups:

ELDERLY - All adults age 75 and older

ADULTS with chronic medical conditions. This includes :

  • People with chronic medical conditions requiring frequent and on-going medical treatment
  • Chronic disorders of the heart or lungs
  • Persistent asthma requiring regular medication
  • Chronic disorders of the kidneys, blood, immune system or metabolism
  • Diabetes requiring treatment with insulin or other medications

All adults age 50 or older with mild asthma or emphysema

This does not include:

  • Adults under 50 years of age with only mild intermittent asthma or emphysema who only require as needed or rescue medications
  • Adults with diabetes managed by diet and exercise alone, not medication
  • Adults under 75 years of age with only high cholesterol, high blood pressure, arthritis, dermatitis, or other diagnoses where influenza would not worsen the disease

* For a complete list of priority groups, go to www.health.ri.gov/flu

Eligible adults can get a flu shot through one of the flu vaccination sites included in the schedule below. To get a flu shot people over the age of 75 must provide proof of age, and others must bring a doctor’s note stating that they are in a high priority group, according to the guidelines. To pre-register for a flu shot, or for specific vaccination times, call the number listed in the schedule.

HEALTH plans to offer vaccination sites throughout the state. If a site near your community does not appear on the schedule yet, watch for an updated schedule.
