Rhode Island Childhood Immunization Rates Remain Among the Best in the Nation

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognized Rhode Island as having one of the highest immunization coverage rates among children under age three in the nation.

According to the CDC’s 2004 National Immunization Survey, released today, nearly 87% of Rhode Island children aged 19 to 35 months, compared to a national average of 81%, have received all of the CDC- recommended vaccinations for that age group. This places Rhode Island as the state with the fourth highest vaccination rate in children 19 to 35 months of age. The complete series of 14 vaccinations protects children against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and Hepatitis B.

“Rhode Island has consistently been among the top five states in the nation for childhood immunization rates, and our rates have continued to rise in recent years,” said Rhode Island Director of Health, David R. Gifford, MD, MPH. “Immunizing our kids is one of the most important things we can do to protect their health and prevent the spread of infectious disease. Our electronic, integrated child health information system (KIDSNET) has played an important role in helping improve our immunization rates. We will continue to work to reach all children – particularly from low income, minority, and non-English speaking families – who are not up to date on their immunizations.”

Rhode Island is one of the few states that provide all recommended vaccines for children free of charge to physicians, jointly funded by health insurance companies, and state and federal governments.

As children return to school this Fall, the Department of Health reminds parents to check with their children’s doctors to make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations. Families who do not have a family doctor or health insurance can call the Family Health Information Line at 1-800-942-7434 to request referral information.
