Misleading Advertisement For Hand Washing Signage In Food Service Establishments
A company called the “ Rhode Island Food Service Compliance Center ” is disseminating a misleading advertisement regarding hand washing sign requirements for food service establishments. The Rhode Island Department of Health has received several inquiries from the food industry concerning this advertisement. The address and telephone number for this company is listed on the advertisement as 11 South Angell St.#110 , Providence , Rhode Island 02906, telephone number1-800-870-2669.
This company is advising food businesses that there is a new law that has taken effect at the federal and state levels requiring a hand washing sign be posted at all hand washing sinks in every food establishment. The letter also indicates failing to post approved hand washing signs may result in fines up to $2500 and a suspension or revocation of license, as well as possible civil liability actions. The letter includes an order form for hand washing posters at a minimum cost of $15.95 each.
There is no such requirement for hand washing signs in the current Rhode Island Department of Health Food Code. The US Food And Drug Administration (FDA) has informed the RI Department of Health that companies also calling themselves “Food Service Compliance Centers” have sent this advisory to food establishments in other states across the country.
Although posting information regarding hand washing is not a requirement in Rhode Island at this time, the RI Department of Health encourages the posting of this information. The Department of Health advises food establishments that receive this or other misleading information to contact the Attorney General’s Office.
