Update on E. coli Investigation in Rhode Island
No New Cases
The Department of Health reports that there are no new cases of E. coli infection. Information on the multistate investigation being coordinated by CDC has not changed.
On June 17, 1998 a case of E. coli related illness was associated with consumption of undercooked, contaminated ground beef in Rhode Island. The Department issued a public health alert to primary care physicians in the state and provided prevention advisories for the public.
Public health officials continue to monitor the situation and advise consumers to thoroughly cook ground beef and other food products from animal sources where disease causing organisms may be present. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be washed before eating. Washing hands frequently reduces the risk of spreading infection.
The Department will issue a new media advisory if more information becomes available.
Additional media conferences are NOT scheduled at this time.
