Department of Health Responds to the Ocean State Action and the Coalition for Consumer Justice Press Conference at Cartie's Health Center

We are informed that Ocean State Action and the Coalition for Consumer Justice have held a press conference at Cartie's Health Center. These organizations have sent letters to the Department of Health to which we will respond directly.

The Health Department is very concerned about the residents of Cartie's Health Center. That's why we issued an immediate compliance order suspending the license on July 2, 1998.

There is no need for an administrative hearing under the law, since the home agreed to stipulate to the compliance order. Cartie's Health Center has followed through on its agreement. The home currently has 48 residents and is able to provide appropriate and adequate care for those residents. With the Alliance for Better Nursing Home Care and the Department of Human Services, we facilitated the transfer of almost 100 residents and monitored the continuity of care in the new placements.

The Department is monitoring the status of resident care by staff visits and through regular reports from the Alliance for Better Nursing Home Care, the volunteer ombudsman program sponsored by the Department of Elderly Affairs.

The events leading to the crisis on July 1 to July 4th are under review by the Department of Health for further administrative or legal action.
