Health Department Reports Bacteria Found in Westerly Drinking Water
Residents Advised to Use Boiled or Bottled Water

Providence -- Recent tests show that water samples obtained from the Westerly public water system contain bacteria exceeding the maximum contaminant level. The Rhode Island Department of Health issued a Notice of Violation to the Westerly Water Department on October 13, 1998. The water authority is required to notify consumers in Westerly, RI and parts of Connecticut that water used for drinking and cooking should be boiled vigorously for one minute.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets drinking water standards for fecal coliform and E. coli bacteria to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. The bacteria are generally not harmful themselves, but their presence in drinking water is often associated with sewage or animal wastes. Under EPA standards, all drinking water samples must be free of these bacteria.

"Contaminated drinking water is something that we need to take very seriously." said Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, the Director of Health for Rhode Island. "The Department of Health recommends that consumers take the following precautions: Use bottled water or boil water used for drinking or cooking for at least one minute; don’t bathe infants and young children in contaminated water; avoid swallowing contaminated water." The Health Department has developed a fact sheet to help the Westerly Water Department address the concerns of Westerly residents and other consumers.

Westerly Water Department personnel are flushing and chlorinating the distribution system to remove contamination. Inspectors will examine the Winnapaug Tank for potential sources of contamination. The Rhode Island Department of Health, in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Health and the Westerly Water Department will continue monitoring the results of water samples closely. The boil/bottled water advisory will remain in effect until corrective actions are completed and tests indicate that the water is safe to use.

Members of the public are advised to call 401-222-3436 for a 24-hour recorded message about the water advisory. For additional information contact the Office of Drinking Water Quality at 222-6867 during regular business hours.
