Health Department Withdraws Advisory on Westerly Drinking Water
Tests Confirm that Water is Safe to Drink
Providence The Rhode Island Department of Health today lifted its boil water advisory for users of the Westerly public water system, effective immediately. The Health Department advised town water officials that the water is safe for drinking, bathing and other uses.
The Rhode Island Department of Health issued a notice to the Westerly Water Department on October 13, 1998 when the water system was found to contain bacteria exceeding the maximum contaminant level. Todays removal of the boil water advisory comes after system-wide disinfection and three days of bacteria free results.
"We appreciate the patience and cooperation of town officials and residents during the past three weeks." said Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, Director of Health for Rhode Island. "Contaminated drinking water is something that we need to take very seriously. By working together we have averted the possibility of illness due to contaminated water."
