Health Department Advises of USDA Food Recall
(with amended list of recalled items, January 29, 1999)

Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, advised that the United States Department of Agriculture is recalling certain foods produced by Thorn Apple Valley, Dixie Food Division, of Forrest City, Arkansas, because of product contamination and potential health risk.

The foods are a variety of ready-to-eat packages including franks, turkey breast, bologna, and cooked ham. The products are identified with "Establishment 13529" or "Establishment P13529" in the USDA Inspection legend or anywhere on the package. The recalled foods are those produced between July 6, 1998 and December 30, 1998.

Food inspections conducted on these products by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service showed possible contamination with a bacteria strain of Listeria monocytogenes. Though the potential for illness is low, serious illness can occur in certain individuals. All products listed below should therefore be returned to the place of purchase for credit. Consumers do not need to be concerned about illness if they consumed hot dogs that were thoroughly cooked, since this bacteria is killed by thorough cooking. Products recalled:
