Nolan announced that the Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) raised the income limits in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program to match the new federal guidelines. The table below compares the old standards with the new standards.
In Rhode Island, it is estimated that 32,000 women and children are eligible for WIC. Presently, more than 23,000 (72% of eligible participants) benefit from the program. According to Dr. Nolan, "The change in income limits reflects the increased cost of living. This gives more Rhode Islanders access to this important public health resource." National research shows a $3.00 savings in future health care costs for every dollar invested in the Program, WIC provides nutrition education and foods to pregnant women as well as children up to their fifth birthday. The program also connects them to other key health services including preventive health care and breastfeeding education and support.
