Student Bike Safety Message a Winner!
Health Department and Community Leaders Cite Winning Design

Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, Rhode Island Director of Health, and other bicycle safety leaders will honor the student winner of a statewide bike safety campaign.

Classical High School Senior Margaret Singsen created the winning logo for the Rhode Island SAFEKIDS bicycle safety T-shirt logo contest. The logo and slogan, "It’s a no brainer, Put it on," will be used on T-shirts to be distributed throughout the state. Local police will award shirts to youngsters who are wearing a helmet while riding their bicycles.

For the winning design, Margaret will be recognized on Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. in front of the Health Department mural, ground floor of the Cannon Building, 3 Capitol Hill, Providence. She will receive a bicycle helmet, a $100 Savings Bond, and a T-shirt with the logo.

Dr. Nolan, Kathleen Kroessler, MD, President of Rhode Island SAFEKIDS Coalition, and Major Richard Sullivan of the Providence Police Department will participate in the brief ceremony.

Rhode Island’s bicycle helmet law requires all bicyclists 15 years of age and younger to wear a helmet when riding a bike. "Helmets save lives and prevent injuries. These T-shirts will reward youngsters who are obeying the law," said Dr. Nolan. "They will also communi-cate the message to young bikers that wearing helmets is not only safe, but cool."

The media are invited to attend this recognition event.
