HEALTH Gives Holiday Prevention Reminder about Meningitis

Rhode Island has experienced 8 sporadic cases of meningococcal disease (often referred to as bacterial meningitis) during 1999. Four cases involved elderly persons and four occurred in children and young adults. The latest, reported today, involves a 22 year old female from West Greenwich. (Due to patient confidentiality, no additional details will be released). HEALTH officials call these illnesses sporadic because they are isolated, unconnected events and do not represent disease outbreaks.

"We expect to see only a few sporadic cases of meningococcal disease." said Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, Rhode Island Director of Health. "With the holidays coming up we have another opportunity to remind Rhode Islanders about ways to avoid exposure to this disease. Prevention is especially important when we gather together for holiday meals.

Meningococcal disease spreads through contact with saliva--such as when kissing on the lips. People should also avoid sharing cigarettes, drinks and eating utensils. Frequent and thorough handwashing reduces exposure.

The symptoms of meningococcal disease include: high fever, headache, stiff neck and small red spots (rash) on the skin. Seek medical advice if these symptoms appear.

HEALTH provides free meningococcal vaccine to Rhode Island children between ages 2 and 18, through private physicians. Reimmunization is not recommended.
