BROWN 2008 SUMMMER MPH INTERNS
M/W/F 16 July – 22 August
Each year incoming students to the Brown MPH Graduate Program are required to fulfill a 6-week summer internship in RI state or community agencies. In past years, we have placed several incoming students (at no cost) in HEALTH programs and received excellent projects and reports while orienting them to public health practice (field experience).
This year, the summer internship begins on Wednesday, July 16th, ends on Friday August 22nd and observes standard University student holidays and vacations. The work days generally involve full days (8 hours) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout the six weeks of the internship. Alternate hours may be necessary for some field experience placements, but the total hours should be similar.
The internship includes both a project and a field experience. The two components should be related, but the field experience(s) may be broader and contribute to a larger understanding of the public health issues.
An internship project may include: designing a public health intervention, performing a quality assessment, writing a research proposal, completing a research analysis/report or developing a website. Students must consult with their field experience mentor and with Dr. Vivier (the MPH Director) to be sure that their proposed project is acceptable for the purposes of the internship.
Each MPH student also participates in a field experience designed to expose the student to real world public health issues. Field experience activities may include (depending on the topic and the qualifications of the student) attending meetings, participating in ongoing activities of the agency, taking part in analytical discussions or delivering health related services, when appropriate. (Note: Student come with a wide variety of backgrounds including medical, physical and social science degrees, business and financial experience and many others).
Mentors are invited to a poster session on Thursday, August 21st, where students present the results of their internship experiences.
If you are interested in placing a MPH Summer Intern in one of your programs, please complete the information in the format below and return it to me. Summer interns are available at no cost to your program and given the generally high quality of these students, this can be a real “win-win” for both the student and your program. Once we have a listing of potential internships, we will try to match each one with a student in the months ahead.
