Mission

To support public health programs concerned with the early detection, surveillance and containment of infectious diseases in the state by providing essential laboratory services. Expedient laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases and timely detection of infectious disease outbreaks allows for preventative measures to be taken that reduce the risk of disease transmission.

What we do

  • Maintain the capacity to respond rapidly to emergent infectious diseases, such as novel strains of influenza, as well as to outbreaks of more common public health significant pathogens.
  • Follow CDC procedures to test human specimens for the presence of environmental toxic substances, such as lead, to obtain a more accurate assessment of population exposure to environmental chemicals.
  • Maintain laboratory emergency preparedness to respond to potential chemical or bioterrorism attacks.
  • Partner with other RIDOH agencies to ensure that actionable laboratory results are promptly utilized to protect public health.
